Hot off the news desk. Messenger Plus! Live 4.70 is finally available to the public. Yes boys and girls start downloading because this new version is something that you will definitely want to get your hands on if you a skins or scripts user. One of the new features that is being unveiled today is the auto-update feature which allows skins and scripts to be updated automatically.
This means that you will no longer have to visit the skins site just to check if you have the latest and greatest version of that skin you love. Though I should point out right now that this is something that only happens once per week and you can only disable it, not actually make it check more often or less often.
You can force it to check for updates though, all you have to do is type in a chat window "/checkupdates" and away you go. So what else is new in 4.70? Well there are a bunch of bug fixes applying to all areas of Messenger Plus! (including skins). One of the bigger skin related bugs to be fixed is the issue that some people were getting with shaped skins like Batman where the top part of the window would get clipped. That issue should now no longer exist.
Now onto part two of this news post. With the release of 4.70 it also means the official opening of the first skin contest to hit Messenger Plus! Live. Yes that's right there is a competition for skin developers and there are big prizes up for grabs. There are 7 Wacom graphics tablets up for grabs. Skins will be divided into 3 categories, originality, deformity (shaped) and functionality.
The grand prize winner (the skin voted best of all categories) will win wacom's flagship product the Cintiq 20WXS. As a graphic designer I can tell you that this is a dream piece of equipment and is very worth the amount of effort you will have to put in to win the contest.
I should point out now that I will not be entering the contest due to my affiliation with Messenger Plus! Live and the fact that I have more skills at skinning than most (not trying to sound arrogant but yeah). So its fair game from here on in.
I will be covering the skin contest by putting up a bunch of tips for developers and also a bit of news on skins to look out for in the contest. So it should be an exciting set of weeks ahead.
Good luck to everyone entering, and remember to join the boards if you are entering the contest.
Willz.
