I've read Willz tuts and I've been reading the WLM PLUS! Documentation for a while and i'm still not understanding how to use it or how to do anything with the text.
Please Help..
i don't get your question. do you wanna know how to use skins/styles or what?
When i replace pictures will i have to alter the styles or definitions in any way. If so how? and what kind of rules do you have to stick to?

To make a skin you don't have to touch the definitions or styles. The only thing is you will be extremely restricted into what you can actually do.
To be able to skin properly you must know how XML and CSS works (the definitions are xml and the styles are css). It's kind of like laying out a webpage, only 10 times more tedious.
If you read through the definitions you can sort of see where things are. Elements have names, so you can tell what they do more or less.
Also those guides are out of date. They were written for 8.5, in Messenger 2009 there are some differences. But the concepts are the same.

I'm using 8.5 because i can't get 9 to work but thanks.
will i need to touch the styles or defininitions to replace pictures or anything else?
Well yeah, you will have to edit definitions and style files if you want to do something good. You can get away with just editing images, but your skin will lack style and features and be restricted in design.
How can i get a better understanding of the styles and defs?
Trial and error, that is about all you can do. Messenger was never meant to be skinned so there isn't really any standard of learning or any official documents you can follow.
Basically you need to know how XML and CSS work. Then just experiment. That is about all you can do.
Okayy thanks
